Re: “,” Nov. 7 letter to the editor.

Given the tragic national headlines, it may seem silly to read another letter about not declawing cats — but itap not silly. Declawing is an unnecessary surgery thatap done for people’s convenience, not for the catap benefit. And itap well-documented that some cases of declawing result in cats having to endure ongoing pain.

Letter-writer Ellen Haverl argues that declawing indoor cats is fine. But if one of her declawed cats ever escapes, it may not survive because it’s less able to protect itself. Many cats that have to be reclaimed at the shelter are indoor cats that “somehow got out.”

Cats are born with claws — they scratch. I’ve had many kittens and cats, and none was declawed. But my furniture and curtains are doing just fine — the cats have multiple scratching posts that they use instead.

If you want the enjoyment of having a pet, please consider the petap well-being, too.
