My politics and values could not be more different from those of Roy Moore (no relation), currently running for U.S. senator from Alabama. There are, however, two aspects of the anti-Moore movement that concern me. One is the rush to believe sex-allegations against him with, so far, no supporting evidence. This, however, is part of a broader and long-overdue national conversation about men behaving badly while women suffer in silence and without recourse. What disturbs me more is the threat by Senate leadership to, if Moore is elected, find a way to not seat or to unseat a senator duly elected by the people and in the absence of any judicial conviction or offense against the Senate, however disagreeable or even repulsive his views may be. If the people of Alabama decide that Moore is good enough for them, who does Senate leadership think they are to dispute that?
