A trial date is set for an Adams County Sheriff’s deputy , causing him to break his pelvis.
James Cook, 33, on Friday entered a plea of not guilty to second-degree assault. Don Sisson, his attorney, asked Weld District Court Judge Julie Hoskins for a five-day jury trial, and she scheduled it for May.
According to the affidavit for his arrest, Cook was one of multiple police officers who responded on March 21 to 12988 Weld County Road 4, just east of U.S. 85 in Brighton. Police were trying to arrest Alejandro Martinez, 24, on suspicion of domestic violence charges. By the time Cook arrived, Martinez had climbed the roof of a shed on the property to evade Brighton police. Cook climbed onto the roof with his police dog and made his way to where Martinez sat on roof’s ledge.
Another police officer then saw Cook plant both his feet in Martinez’s back and kick him, sending him 20 feet to the ground where he landed on a concrete block. A March news release from the Adams County Sheriff’s office states Cook was placed on administrative leave.
