The Boulder man accused of driving a truck into a mine shaft in the Boulder County foothills last year — killing both of his teenage passengers — was sentenced to three years of probation after entering into a plea deal.
Isaac Lutz, 32, pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and reckless driving, according to Boulder District Attorney spokeswoman Catherine Olguin. In addition to the three years of probation, Lutz was ordered to complete 750 hours of community service.
In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped the rest of the charges, including two counts of vehicular homicide.
While Lutz initially entered a plea of not guilty, his attorneys had indicated they were mulling a plea deal as early as last November.
Sarah Ball, 18, of Boulder, and Peter Kim, 19, of Aurora, were passengers in Lutz’s Korean War-era truck when it crashed into a mine shaft west of Gold Hill near the Switzerland Trail last June.
