Jose Angel Aguero Jr, 26, was fatally shot by Greeley police officers Thursday morning just outside the city.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident, released Aguero’s identity Friday, adding that he was a Greeley resident and in possession of a handgun that was reported stolen in November.

Aguero has an arrest record that dates back to 2009, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records. He had previously entered guilty pleas related to misdemeanor theft, trespassing and criminal mischief.

Thursday morning, police located a stolen vehicle in a ditch around Two Rivers Parkway and 37th Street, according to the sheriff’s office. A bystander said the driver was still in the car.

Officers attempted to contact Aguero but he ran. Officers said they gave multiple loud commands for him to stop and attempted less lethal bean bag rounds. Aguero then allegedly pulled a gun and the officers shot him.

Aguero was pronounced dead on scene. No officers were injured. The officers involved have been put on administrative leave.
