High winds have begun wreaking havoc in Boulder County, toppling trees, snarling power lines and forcing Eldora to shut down for the day.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research’s Mesa lab recorded gusts of up to 72 mph this morning, while the National Wind Technology Center just south of the city recorded gusts of up to 76 mph, and a weather spotter in Gold HIll reported one upwards of 100 mph.

A high wind warning has been issued for the Front Range foothills by the National Weather Service, and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office has issued a burn ban in the foothills due to the winds.

Outside Nederland, Eldora ski resort issued a wind hold until 10 a.m. and then decided to close the mountain for the day after re-evaluating conditions. The resort also shut down its Nordic center for the day.

Police and fire crews were responding to numerous calls across the county of downed trees and power lines.
