As the super blue blood moon slipped in and out of visibility early Wednesday morning, a chill crept into the Denver metro area.

Temperatures dropped below freezing into the mid 20s early Wednesday under a spectacular celestial light show in which the dark, red-tinted moon was plainly visible.

It will be much cooler in Colorado than it has been the past few days with the high fighting to reach 50 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. Winds will gust as high as 18 mph.

Late Wednesday and into early Thursday a northerly wind will bring freezing drizzle, most likely after 2 a.m. The rain could turn to snow.

Between 1 and 4 inches of snow are possible in the mountains. Little or no snow accumulation is expected in the Denver metro area.

Partly sunny skis are forecast for Friday and Saturday, when high temperatures will reach the 50s.

There’s a slight chance for snow before 11 a.m. on Super Bowl Sunday.
