Re: “Retailers Dick’s and Walmart take harder line against guns,” Feb. 28 news story.
Kudos to Dick’s Sporting Goods’ decision to refuse to sell semi-automatic weapons and large-capacity magazines in its stores. Isn’t it time for Visa, Mastercard and American Express to stop enabling the purchase of semi-automatic guns and magazines by credit card? Instead of being part of the gun violence problem, corporations could choose to be part of the solution. When common-sense legislation does not happen, alternative economic measures will impact and help decrease our current crisis. Corporate America could do more. Let’s encourage them to step up to this challenge and save precious lives.

We recently learned that Dick’s and Walmart have decided not to sell guns to customers under the age of 21. While I support this decision, it is easy to interpret this action as age discrimination because a 20-year old has a legal right to purchase a firearm in this country. Many are applauding this decisive action by the corporate executives, but this seems like a slippery slope. What if it was a cake instead of a gun? What if sexual orientation instead of age was the basis for refusing a sale? Aren’t we substituting one bias for another?
