BOULDER — Hundreds of University of Colorado Boulder students gathered on short notice for a rally on Thursday to call for the firing of Chancellor Phil DiStefano, following his decision to reduce CU Student Government’s budget by more than 90 percent.

The university, as of Thursday afternoon, has refused to discuss the controversial move, beyond issuing a statement online late Wednesday night.

University officials handed student leaders a document explaining the changes, and at the bottom of the document students were told to direct media calls and requests to the university spokesman, Ryan Huff. Students immediately ignored that order Wednesday night, and then held a very loud, public protest rally outside the University Memorial Center.

The rally was organized by the five groups of students currently running against one another as separate campaigns to lead CUSG. The election is next week.

DiStefano announced late Wednesday evening that he is moving a majority of funds that have been managed by the CU Student Government — about $21 million of the $23 million budget — over to the office of the vice chancellor for student affairs.
