
Re: “This solution to gerrymandering is worse than the problem,” April 4 Charles Lane column.
Anyone who cares about democracy and fairness in the U.S. sees gerrymandering as a threat to the rights of citizens. Charles Lane’s statement, “The Supreme Court should leave partisan politics to partisan politicians,” which he attributes to Sandra Day O’Connor, misses the point completely. All politics is partisan. Any outcome favors one position over another. More appropriately, the question is how egregious the result will be. Extreme outcomes tend to rig the system and destroy the foundation of democracy. American citizens do not need a system stacked against them.
