Re: “Cigarette butts to be cleaned from East Colfax Avenue thanks to $10,000 grant,” April 4 news story.
Wow! A $10,000 Cigarette Litter Prevention Program grant for East Colfax Avenue. And there were 41 other such grants nationwide.
Here’s the thing: most of that money will be wasted on studies, committees, proposals and general bureaucracy with little impact on the butt problem.
But there is a sure-butt solution to eliminating cigarette litter on East Colfax: buy back the butts for a penny each, just like aluminum cans — and you won’t need a stolen grocery cart to haul them. In fact, use the can collection system to administer the program.
The Colfax $10,000 grant alone can buy back 1 million butts Plus, the homeless have another perpetual means of support. If there are not enough butts on East Colfax to spend the 10 grand, go citywide. Problem solved.
