Our third and final mock draft of the season launched this morning, and if you don’t recognize the byline, don’t sweat it — he’s not a usual contributor to The Denver Post.

You may have noticed lately that we’re a little short staffed, especially when it comes to Broncos coverage, as our two exceptional beat reporters recently took new opportunities. Tough timing for us, but that’s how the business works sometimes, and Gina Mizell and Kyle Fredrickson have been doing a great job filling in leading up to the most important draft the Broncos have had in years. But they don’t have a lot of spare time to study tape between covering the Nuggets and Avalanche. You know who does digest draft content almost religiously in his spare time?

Gabe Harrison, a 13-year-old from Westminster whose mock draft selections were well thought out and few gave me reason to raise an eyebrow.

“I pay so much attention to the draft because I love knowing what the next group of players is going to be able to offer the NFL,” Harrison told me earlier this week.

Despite my disappointment he doesn’t see the Broncos taking Baker Mayfield at No. 5, Harrison seems to know what he’s talking about. And even if he’s wrong, well, Todd McShay or Mel Kiper Jr. will be, too — neither have the Browns making the same No. 1 overall pick, and they can’t both be right.

It’s a mock draft. It’s supposed to be fun and create discussion. I’m glad we got to have Harrison share with us his picks, because chances are he’ll get more right than a good chunk of the national experts. (And yes, we’ll track it.)

No. 5

Broncos cornerback Chris Harris doesn’t know how Denver will use its No. 5 overall NFL draft pick, however, he does know what position the team should not select.
