Street racer dies in Colorado Springs crash; other racer flees

The second racer sped away without stopping

A person driving a small black sedan was killed Wednesday night after slamming into a pickup truck in Colorado Springs while racing another car at high speed.

A racer was pronounced dead at the scene and the pickup driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The names of the victims have not been released.

Witnesses told police that at about 8:17 p.m. two cars were racing each other at high speed on southbound South Academy Boulevard when turned left from northbound South Academy Boulevard onto westbound Airport Road.

The driver of the black sedan died at the scene before paramedics arrived, Black said.

The second racer sped away without stopping, according to a news release by Colorado Springs police spokesman Howard Baker.

The police departmentap Major Accident Unit is investigating the collision.

“Speed is a factor in this crash,” Black’s news release says.
