Frequent the Colorado clubhouse and you’ll often see all-star Nolan Arenado walking around in a white “Perkis Power” T-shirt from the 1995 comedy Heavyweights, a movie about a fat kids camp taken over by a mean, unstable fitness guru named Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller).
“I’ve got couple of them — they’re comfortable to wear around the clubhouse, and I got them sent to me,” Arenado said. “Back in the day, it was one of my favorite movies.”
Perkis would probably be thrilled to have Arenado in his camp, as the third baseman has been “Perkisizing” at the plate this season as Colorado’s leader in average (.320) and on-base percentage (.414) despite not having much protection around him in the order.
But while the hilarity of Heavyweights matches up with Arenado’s relaxed demeanor in the clubhouse, his favorite movie as an adult — The Godfather — speaks more to his cutthroat approach on the diamond.
Entering Saturday’s game against Cincinnati, Arenado has reached base in 43 of his 46 games played this year, and is hitting a sizzling .421 with runners in scoring position this month.
Could Arenado’s continued dominance be because he, like Tony Perkis, eats success for breakfast… with skim milk?
