A 40-year-old man has been charged with vehicular homicide while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an fatal crash after he allegedly drove into a pedestrian on a sidewalk and kept driving until he rolled the car, ejecting and killing his passenger.
Denver District Attorney Beth McCann also charged Leonardo Cano-Merida, whose driver’s license was expired at the time, with drunken vehicular assault, according to McCann’s spokesman Ken Lane.
Cano-Merida was previously convicted of drunken driving in Sheridan in 2002, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
On Sunday, Cano-Merida allegedly was driving on South Federal Boulevard when he lost control of his vehicle, drove onto a sidewalk near West Harvard Avenue and struck a pedestrian.
He then allegedly continued driving into a field where the vehicle rolled. A man who was riding with him was ejected from the car and killed.
At that point, Cano-Merida allegedly fled the scene.
When police approached him he showed signs of alcohol impairment.
Cano-Merida is scheduled to appear in court on June 27.
