Sweltering hot temperatures are expected in the Denver metro area this week with the mile-high-city hitting triple digits by Thursday, forecasters say.

If Denver does hit 100 degrees it will beat a record of 99 degrees, said Jim Kalina, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder.

“We have a chance to break that record,” Kalina said Monday. “Typically we can get really hot this time of the year.”

A ridge of high pressure will enter the state Tuesday, when temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s and remain very hot through the weekend, he said. A southwesterly wind flow will also contribute to the hot temperatures, he added.

Kalina recommended that anyone going out in the sun drink a lot of water, wear a hat and put on the sun block.

High temperatures will drop to the lower-to-mid 80s on Saturday and Sunday, the NWS says.
