A suspect in an armed robbery at a business in Westminster was fatally shot by police as he fled the scene in a car and attempted to hit an officer, police said.

The incident unfolded at about 2:10 p.m. when a suspected thief in a store was contacted by a store security employee, police said. The suspect threatened the employee with a knife and fled.

Police said there were two suspects involved. One man fled on foot and the other man fled in a sedan.

The suspect fleeing in the car was spotted by officers. The driver eluded police, who made multiple attempts to stop the car, according to a news release. The driver tried to hit an officer, who was out of his patrol car. That officer fired his gun, hitting the driver.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The other suspect, who fled on foot, was captured and taken into custody. No officers were injured.

The 120th Avenue frontage road is closed between Chase Street and Sheridan Boulevard. Drivers should avoid the area if possible.
