Blake or Garrett?
The goofy mountain man from Tahoe, or the pre-cocaine Johnny Manziel doppelganger from Colorado? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you have excellent taste in television.
Sadly, I do not. And no question facing the United States is more important tonight than that of who Becca will choose in the season finale of The Bachelorette: Blake or Garrett?
If you’re from Colorado and your answer is Garrett, kindly do us all a favor and drive to DIA, buy the cheapest ticket to Reno and never come back. Blake, who calls Bailey his hometown, is clearly the perfect match, if for no other reason than he’s one of our own and, by golly, I like seeing Coloradans with smiles on their faces and not bawling in the back seat of a limo.
Curious as to why we’re discussing him in today’s Denver Sports Omelette? Well, Blake Horstmann used to be an impressive athlete up in the mountains.
A 2007 graduate of Platte Canyon High School, Horstmann was 6-foot-3, 175 pounds and played quarterback and defensive back, though his skills under center were lacking. As a senior, he completed 42 percent of his passes for 414 yards, six touchdowns and seven interceptions for the 6-4 Huskies, who lost to Faith Christian in the first round of the Class 2A Playoffs. But on the defensive side of the ball, he was first-team all-state.
For tomorrow's Denver Sports Omelette, I'm writing about an important Colorado athlete …
— Matt L. Stephens (@MattStephens)
He later played wide receiver at Hastings College in Nebraska, but his most impressive performances came on the basketball court. Horstmann averaged nearly 22 points and seven rebounds per game as a high school senior. Itap a medical marvel he didn’t need back surgery that year after carrying his team, leading the Huskies with 263 points despite only playing in 12 games. The next-closest player in scoring (227 points, 10.8 per game) played in all 21 of Platte Canyon’s contests. Horstmann broke 30 points thrice as a senior, scoring 37 in a 68-58 loss to Conifer.
Will decade-old athletic achievements help him win Becca’s heart? Meh, probably not, but it gives you some trivia to quiz your friends with as you turn on ABC tonight.
That is, unless you have excellent taste in television.
