Another tariff casualty?

Given the disdain of legitimate news by the head of the current U.S. administration, itap hardly a surprise that import tariffs include newsprint.

The death penalty is a deterrent

Re: “Pope’s voice joins chorus against executions,” Aug. 8 editorial
As a practicing Catholic I was shocked and dismayed to see the Pope’s new interpretation of church doctrine regarding capital punishment after 2,000 years of teaching otherwise.

I was not shocked however to see the left leaning Denver Post editorial board jump to comment on it in the form of an editorial!
What a slap in the face to the likes of William Petit of Connecticut whose wife was raped and burned alive with her daughters and other families who seek justice for those they have lost to brutal murderers.

Who are you to say this form of punishment is from a bygone era and should be repealed? There are documented cases of people not murdering in fear of the death penalty. Not everybody shares your views!

Re: “Psychiatrist: Much is still hidden in the mind of Aurora shooter,” Aug. 6 news story

Once again the families and friends of the 12 Aurora theater killings have to be reminded that while their loved ones are dead the shooter continues to live at an undisclosed location. And the Colorado taxpayers who spent an enormous amount of money on his trial continue to pay for his food, shelter, clothing, health care, and who knows what else for as long as he lives.

The psychiatrist who wrote a book about Holmes and spent hours asking him questions and reviewing documents stated that “… society will likely never have a comprehensive understanding of what led James Holmes to commit murder.” But, supposing he had asked him a hypothetical question: “Would you have killed those people if you knew with absolute certainty that within 30 days you would have been executed for that crime at the state penitentiary?”

I wonder what his answer would have been.

Fracking fluid hazardous, or not?

Re: “Truck hauling fracking fluid overturns,” Aug. 4 news story

Wait a minute! A truck carrying fracking fluid overturned in Poudre Canyon and required a hazmat team to clean it up. Isn’t this the same fluid that the oil and gas industry has been telling us is safe?

If Coloradans want to see what their air and water quality will look like with unmitigated drilling, go to Carlsbad, N.M.

A brown haze hugs the horizon and the night sky is aflame with wells burning off methane. The air smells and tastes of oil, and the tap water is too nasty to drink. It is a scenario that could very well play out here.

Be proactive against misbehavior

Re: “Complaints against mayor would mean outside investigation, Aug. 7 news story

I appreciate the Denver city council and Denver Mayor Hancock recently putting some baby-teeth policies in place for harassment and misbehavior type claims made against an elected official.

As you work on these policies in the future, don’t forget to put in the part about more transparency to the citizens of the outcomes of the claims against an elected official.

The city rules haven’t kept up with the city’s modernization.

We need to be more proactive as a city, so such policies don’t have to be made reactively.
