A man was found guilty Wednesday of murdering a man behind a southwest Denver building in 2017, prosecutors said.

A jury convicted Shane Grant, 37, of one count of first-degree murder and one count of third-degree assault after five days of trial, according to a news release from Denver District Attorney Beth McCann. The murder charge carries possible sentences of life imprisonment without parole and the death penalty.

Grant assaulted 56-year-old John Chacon in the early hours of March 17, 2017, behind a building at the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Florida Avenue. Police found Chacon unconscious and bleeding. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he died a few days later.

A witness identified Grant as the assailant, police said. When police arrested Grant nearby, he was covered in blood.

Grant has a lengthy arrest history dating back to 1999, according to records from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The charges include robbery, assault, trespassing and parole violations.
