Douglas County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a suspect who allegedly fired multiple times at them during a traffic stop Friday evening on U.S. 85 near Sedalia.

Two deputies initiated the stop at Delva Way and U.S. 85 at 4:45 p.m. Friday, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Lauren Lekander. At 5:11 p.m., one of the deputies announced “shots fired” over the police radio, Lekander said.

The suspect fired at the two deputies multiple times, she said.

“It was just a routine traffic stop,” Lekander said. “We had a suspect get out of the vehicle and shoot at our deputies, and our deputies returned fire.”

Lekander said she did not know what occurred in the time between the traffic stop and the shooting nor what led the deputies to pull the suspect over.

It’s not yet known how many times the suspect was shot. Neither deputy was injured in the shooting, Lekander said.
