Two men in a vacant home in Fremont County jumped from a second-story window in an attempt to flee deputies, but both were captured and arrested, with one suspect armed, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Thursday at about 6:40 p.m. deputies were sent to the area of Elm Avenue and Willow Street in Cañon City on a report of a suspicious vehicle. Deputies arrived and found an unoccupied truck in the 1500 block of Willow. They checked nearby properties and found locks pried off the door of a vacant house.

Deputies heard people upstairs in the home and shouted out verbal commands. Deputies then heard glass break, with the two suspects jumping out a window and fleeing on foot.

At about 7 p.m. one suspect was apprehended in the 1800 block of Elm, according to a news release. He was identified as 36-year-old Morris Bentley Swift of Cañon City. Swift was armed with a gun, the sheriff’s office said. He was arrested without further incident.

The second suspect, identified as Roger David Zaragoza, 39, of Florence, was arrested at about 10 p.m. in the 1800 block of Elm.

Both suspects are being held at the Fremont County Jail on multiple charges including second-degree burglary, resisting arrest and theft. Swift is also suspected of drug possession and possession of a weapon by a previous offender among other charges.
