School officials transported Everitt Middle School students by bus to Wheat Ridge High School after a strong gas smell wafted onto campus from a nearby gas station under construction, authorities say.

Middle school kids and teachers were transferred at 8:15 am due to the smell of gasoline in the building, according to a news release.

Parents are asked to pick up students at Wheat Ridge High School at any time.

“Be patient as there will be lots of parents in the parking lot. Parents need an ID to pick up kids at WRHS. And reunification is not quick – all kids will be checked out one by one for safety reasons,” the school says.

Tanks from the gas station had some leaks and are now being repaired.

West Metro Fire Protection District checked air quality and there is no danger to staff or students. However staff and students were reporting headaches, so the decision was made to move students and dismiss class for the day, the notice says.

There is no danger to students or staff, but the smell entered the school’s circulation system. Any after-school activities at Everitt scheduled for Tuesday have also been canceled.
