The Nuggets have flirted with the postseason the past two years but came up one game shy each season. There is more optimism than there has been in years that this is finally the campaign to break the postseason drought, which dates back to 2013. Their offense is among the NBA’s elite; their defense, ranked in the lower third of the league last year, must improve.

Road woes

The Nuggets were just 15-26 away from the last season, including several losses that ended up costing them significantly. Coach Mike Malone has emphasized the importance of winning on the road — while also defending home court as they did last year with an incredible 31-10 record.

The Nuggets are extremely young and Malone has harped on leaders holding other players accountable throughout the season. The three most likely candidates to step up remain , and . All three are vital and could be considered a mini “Big 3.”

The Nuggets’ two biggest offseason acquisitions, and Michael Porter Jr., remain out with injury. The Nuggets are taking the long view with Porter Jr, recognizing that they don’t need him to contentd this year. As for Thomas, there remains no timeline for when the feisty guard might return to action following hip surgery, though he would help bolster the backcourt.

Barton’s back

is firmly in the starting lineup for the first time in his career after getting a new, lucrative deal this past summer. He provided go-to scoring off the bench last season, but it will be fascinating to see his adjustment while playing alongside even more potent offense players.
