Colorado Parks and Wildlife is asking residents keep wildlife safety in mind while hanging lights and decorations this holiday season.

Decorations can injure or trap animals, the department stated in a news release. Decorative holiday lights are often an issue, as the department every year receives several reports of bucks getting stuck in outdoor displays.

Deer are starting their mating season, according to the news release, and are only thinking about finding a mate.

The department recommends people wrap lights and decorations tightly around posts and trees. Hanging lights should be at least 6 feet off the ground and fastened at the ends. The news release also advises avoiding draping lights around bushes or on trees.

Small animals, such as rabbits or squirrels, sometimes chew on the wiring and bulbs of holiday decorations, said Jason Clay, department spokesman for the northeast region.
