The Douglas County Board of Commissioners on Monday will consider committing $10 million to beef up public school safety in the county, according to an agenda of their meeting.
One student was killed and eight others injured Tuesday at the STEM School Highlands Ranch. Two students at the school are in custody in connection with the shooting. No school resource officer was on duty the day of the shooting and documents released Friday afternoon by Sheriff Tony Spurlock outlined a dispute over the previous school resource officer’s duties, performance and equipment.
The school district had requested a $6,731 refund, from its contract with the sheriff, after an assigned school resource officer became ill in April 2018 and missed the end of the school year.
Douglas County Commissioners on Monday, at a work session, will also discuss “additional mental health services” for the county. On Wednesday night, about 200 STEM School students walked out of the Highlands Ranch High School gymnasium, en mass, to protest the political nature of an event that had been billed as a vigil.
“Mental health” was among the chants students made as they rallied to have their collective voice heard.
