Bettering our world

Re: “He will do great things for mankind,” May 27 news story

While reading about local high school student Krithik Ramesh, who won an award for a medical technology invention at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, I was struck by a couple things.

First, how wonderful and lucky that this brilliant young man has parents able to nurture his genius and guide him to mentors.

Second, how wonderful that his parents have instilled compassion and moral values in him. He donated the monies from his previous award to the installation of solar panels on schools in rural India with little access to electricity. In an age when greed and self-interest are lauded values, how inspiring that such a talented young person uses his gifts to lift others. If more would follow in his footsteps, if communities cultivated and elevated altruism, how much better our sad, myopic world would be.

Lock up your guns

The NRA again displayed its true colors by opposing the gun storage proposal in Texas.

In an effort to keep kids safe, the bill would fund a campaign for people with guns to store them properly. But the NRA opposes this bill, demonstrating once again that it cares little about the safety of kids.
