A 1-year-old cat was stoned to death in an east Denver neighborhood, and investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward.

A person who lives in the East Colfax neighborhood found the cat’s body early Friday morning across from Verbena Park, said Tammy Vigil, spokeswoman for the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment.

“It was basically stoned to death,” she said. “It was surrounded by rocks that had blood and hair on them.”

The cat, Charlie, had been adopted about six months ago.

Denver Animal Protection officers believe the killing happened sometime between 7 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday, Vigil said.

The cat’s owner, Terri Kimrey, said that an animal protection officer knocked on her door this morning asking about Charlie. Kimrey first thought that Charlie had misbehaved.

Instead, the officer told her that Charlie had been killed.

“I don’t know if Charlie was just in the wrong place at the wrong time or what,” Kimrey said.

Investigators are asking witnesses to come forward. They’re also asking that residents in the neighborhood check their security cameras for any evidence.
