Steven J. Summer, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Colorado Hospital Association, is retiring.

Steven Summer, who as head of the Colorado Hospital Association saw the creation of the state’s hospital provider fee, will retire at the end of the year, the organization announced Monday.

Chris Tholen, executive vice president of the association, will replace Summer in the lead executive role on Jan. 1, 2020, according to the news release.

“It has been my great honor to serve as the leader for this incredible organization for the past 13 years,” Summer said in a statement. “Colorado’s hospitals are committed to improving the health of their communities, and through our vast network of rural and critical access hospitals, academic centers, trauma centers, behavioral health facilities and community hospitals — I believe they have met that vision and will continue to do so well into the future.”

Summer became president and chief executive officer of the Hospital Association in 2006. Previously, he worked with the West Virginia Hospital Association and the Maryland Hospital Association, according to the news release.
