Players’ Weekend is right around the corner on Aug. 23-25, when the Rockies visit St. Louis for a four-game series. Colorado is set to and once again players across the majors get to put nicknames on the back of their jerseys and wear customized gear.
Some of Colorado’s nicknames are obvious — “Baby Dahl” for , the well-known moniker “Chuck Nazty” for — but a handful have a backstory that needs explaining. A rundown of a few of those Rockies nicknames:
Yonder Alonso (Mr 305) — The veteran first baseman pays homage to his native Miami, Fla., where 305 is the dominant area code. A product of Coral Gables High School and the University of Miami, Alonso first took on the nickname in Oakland during Players’ Weekend in 2016.
, and (Emojis) —Bettis’ lettuce emoji is a play off his last name and has been around for a couple seasons now; Wolters’ paper emoji is for his nickname “Papers” that he earned from teammates for his propensity to carry around a fat stack of scouting reports; and The Gray Wolf has, obviously, chosen a wolf emoji.
(Wild Thing) — Since Estevez shares the same birth name as actor Charlie Sheen, the right-handed flamethrower has as the strike-zone challenged reliever Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn from the 1989 baseball classic “Major League.” Vaughn is played by Sheen in the movie.
(F. Stanley) — A nickname that goes back to Freeland’s boyhood days in south Denver, “F. Stanley” stands for Flat Stanley, a children’s book character who was squashed flat by a billboard. The 6-foot-4 southpaw originally got the name from friends because of how lanky and thin he was (and still is).
(Sponge) — One of the most unusual nicknames on Colorado’s roster, “Sponge” is actually a shortening of “Spongebob”, a moniker bestowed upon Iannetta by teammate Brad Hawpe in 2008. “Hawpe said I was about four feet tall and four feet wide, so he called me Spongebob,” Iannetta said. “Over time it just became Sponge.”
(ұ)— The veteran right-handed reliever can often be found playing video games on some sort of portable gaming device before Rockies games, whether it’s at or on the road. Hence, “Geek,” for Shaw’s dedication to conquering all kinds of villians.
(El Fifty) —While the young outfielder is also known as “El Cangrejo” — Spanish for “The Crab” — because of the way he clicks his elbows together while at bat, Tapia is again going with El Fifty on his jersey. It’s what his friends call him, and it stems from the rapper 50 Cent because Tapia always likes to sit around and bump music.
(True) —Colorado’s shortstop originally got the name from former third baseman and current special assistant Vinny Castilla during Story’s rookie year in 2016. Castilla obviously saw in Story what the whole baseball world sees in the all-star now. He deemed the shortstop’s skills, and the story of his rise to stardom, as true as true could get.
Bud Black (Harry) —Black’s nickname is actually…. his real name. “It’s a twist!” Black said with a laugh. Born Harry Ralston Black, the skipper originally got his nickname of Bud from his sister. It was after the son in the family sitcom “Father Knows Best,” which ran on NBC and CBS throughout the 1950s and into early 1960.
