Denver woke up to its coldest Halloween morning on record on Thursday, with a low temperature of 7 degrees good enough to break the old daily record.

The old record low was a 10 degree reading, set in 1991.

A subtle and localized overnight wind shift, however, prevented any all-time monthly records from being broken on Thursday in Denver. That said, temperatures plunged well below zero in both Greeley and Limon on Thursday morning.

Thursday also continued a mostly unwanted stretch of brutal cold. Since late Saturday night, Denver has been below freezing for over 100 hours, a streak that will likely come to an end later on in the day on Thursday.

High temperatures will rebound into the 40s on Thursday afternoon, however, as sunshine should allow temperatures to recover somewhat after a brutally cold five day stretch.

In addition to the record cold (again) on Thursday morning, Denver’s average temperature for the month of October dropped to 44.4 degrees after Wednesday. That already makes it Denver’s sixth-coldest October on record, with a top-five finish a near certainty once Thursday’s record cold is added in.
