With two heavyweights battling for the chance to be crowned Big 12 champions Saturday, it was one young Denver native who came out on top.

And she didn’t play a down.
Jazlyn Rodriguez, a student at Texas Christian University, took home the grand prize of $100,000 in tuition as the winner of the Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway. The contest involved students from across the country competing to throw the most footballs through a giant soda can during halftime of the conference championship.

Rodriguez was one of 20 finalists chosen based on video submissions explaining how the tuition dollars would better their lives. In the video, she described growing up in a low-income family, the first in her family to attend a four-year university.
Upon winning, Rodriguez, clad in a maroon Dr Pepper jersey, cupped her hand in front of her mouth, eyes appearing to water as took in the magnitude of her accomplishment. Later, she posed with a giant check and a wide smile. “One hundred thousand dollars in tuition,” the check read.
