Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey could do something next week that hasn’t happened in two decades.
The former Valor Christian star is just 67 yards away from reaching the 1,000-yards-receiving mark. Since he already has 1,361 yards rushing, he could become the first player since Marshall Faulk in 1999 to reach 1,000 yards in both categories in a single season. And just the third overall, joining Roger Craig, who accomplished the feat in 1985 with the 49ers.
He’s also 215 yards away from matching Chris Johnson’s NFL record of 2,509 yards from scrimmage in a single season. McCaffrey has only reached the 215-yard threshold once this season, a 237-yard effort against Jacksonville in Week 5.
It won’t be a cake walk for the third-year back, who will have to face the 12-3 Saints, who are still battling for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. When Carolina faced New Orleans in Week 12, McCaffrey finished with 64 yards rushing and 69 yards receiving.
