If you’re taking a trip to the park, don’t forget to head to the library first.

Nearly 300 libraries across Colorado participate in “,” a program that lets people check out a backpack that includes a state park pass, a guidebook to the parks, an activity ideas list, binoculars and various educational materials that include fishing instructions and wildflower guides.

A person can hold onto the pack and pass for up to seven days and use it to visit any of Colorado’s .

A daily vehicle park pass costs between $9 and $11 depending on the park. An annual pass costs $120.

In 2018, 7,630 backpacks were checked out, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. That comes out to 147 checkouts per week.

The program is available at local library systems, as well as publicly funded college and university libraries. A .
