Four Colorado Springs police officers shot and killed a man they say pointed a gun at them late Sunday night.

The officers responded about 10 p.m. to a home in the 3200 block of Oak Creek Drive East for a report of a domestic disturbance, according to a news release from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, which will investigate the shooting. The caller said the suspect was armed with a rifle.

Officers arrived and found the man outside. After speaking with him, the man allegedly ran inside and grabbed a rifle, according to the news release. The man pointed the gun at the officers, four of whom opened fired, according to the release.

The man, later identified as 28-year-old Virgill Thorpe, was struck at least once and transported to a hospital, where he later died.

The officers were placed on administrative leave per department policy while the shooting is investigated.
