Denver entered the NFL draft with a need at wide receiver. They selected Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy with the 15th overall pick. apountry reacted with plenty of optimism. How about the national media? Here’s a look:
(B): “I like Jeudy a lot. He’s the best route runner in this draft. One concern I have with him is he’s really thin. Will he be able to hold up to press coverage?”
(A+): “Jeudy is the most likely of this year’s receivers to develop into a Michael Thomas- or Adam Thielen-like route technician who can serve as both a possession receiver and a deep threat.
“The Broncos got an all-purpose playmaker to pair with Courtland Sutton and help accelerate Drew Lock’s development. The Broncos offense will soon be above average for the first time since Peyton Manning got old. This pick could not have worked out better for the Broncos.”
(A+): “The Broncos have a budding star in “X” receiver Courtland Sutton, who can consistently win one-on-one downfield on the perimeter and hurt teams with in-breaking routes. But for their optimism in 2019 second-round quarterback Drew Lock to be fully realized, they needed a “Z” receiver—that guy who can go in motion, run every route at every level and contribute via yards-after-catch. Some feel that Jeudy is the best route runner coming out of college in this era. The Broncos addressed a glaring need with a stylistically perfect prospect, and they didn’t have to trade up to do it.”
(B): “The Broncos were targeting the best available wide receiver or defensive tackle on their board, so this pick was easier with Kinlaw off the board. Second-year QB Drew Lock gets a fine complement to big-bodied deep threat Courtland Sutton outside, DaeSean Hamilton in the slot and Noah Fant at tight end. Jeudy (6-1, 193 pounds) fits the profile as a No. 1 receiver who runs smooth routes inside or outside. He is a classic intermediate to deep field-stretcher and savvy drive-finisher in the red zone.”
(A-): “Denver is building quite the supporting cast for Drew Lock. Jeudy is a top-10 talent and arguably the most complete receiver in the class. He didn’t run a blazing 40, but he always looks like the quickest player on the field thanks to his rare change-of-direction skills. Jeudy is a nuanced route-runner who can get open all over the field, and he’s a threat with the ball in his hands. With Courtland Sutton already on the roster, the Broncos passing game could be special.”
(no grade): “Courtland Sutton is a star, but Denver needs to give second-year quarterback Drew Lock more weapons if the Broncos are to improve a passing offense that ranked 28th last year and get back into the playoffs. Jeudy’s ability to get open underneath makes him an outstanding complement to Sutton’s size and capacity to make plays downfield. Second-year tight end Noah Fant also should benefit from Jeudy helping to open up the offense.”
