Newly hired UNC assistant coach, former Stanford athlete dies at 26

A recently-hired University of Northern Colorado assistant football coach died Thursday.

Zach Hoffpauir, 26, died in his sleep,  from the athletic department. The university did not provide any additional details about the cause of death.

Head coach Ed McCaffrey hired Hoffpauir, a Stanford University graduate, in February to coach safeties.

Hoffpauir was an Arizona native and tasked with recruiting players from the state.

His father, Doug Hoffpauir, told AZCentral his son was excited to start his coaching career at UNC and “influence lives beyond football.”
