A 32-year-old Breckenridge woman was sentenced Monday to 16 years behind bars for driving drunk and killing two people in a head-on crash last summer.

Lindsey Leigh Ward had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system when she crossed the center line on Colorado 9 near Breckenridge and struck a car occupied by Benjamin Mitton, 41, and Nichole Gough, 43 — both of whom were killed in the crash, authorities said.

In April, Ward pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide-DUI, both class 3 felonies, in the Aug. 30, 2019 collision. Police say she had .290 blood alcohol content after consuming mixed drinks, downing shots and having a beer at the Breckenridge Golf Course.

Ward stopped by a liquor store, where she bought more beer and tequila, shortly before the crash, police said.
