Denver weather: Record temperatures, smoky skies and high fire danger continue Sunday

Hot weather and poor air quality continue Sunday as wildfires rage across the state. According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, the high in Denver is expected to reach 98 degrees — matching the record high set in 2009 and 2011 — with a low of 66 degrees.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has issued an through 4 p.m. today as heavy smoke from wildfires settles over Denver. The NWS recommends that residents avoid outdoors activities due to the smoky skies and also issued a because of the record temps and poor air quality.

The heat is expected to continue for several days. Monday is forecast to hit a high of 98 with a low of 66, the NWS said. Tuesday will be similar with a high of 97 and a low of 65 degrees. Tuesday and Wednesday both have a 20% chance of showers but it won’t break the heat.

The 90-degree streak has the best chance of breaking on Friday, the NWS reported. Friday’s high is projected to hit 86 degrees with a slight chance for storms.
