Remember those powerful winds from earlier this week? Well, the wind is picking up speed again.
The National Weather Service in Boulder warned Wednesday high winds over high-terrain areas will be a major concern. A mountain wave came through in the early morning and is expected to weaken by the afternoon. The wave has already pushed winds in the 60-to-70 mph range over Cameron Peak.
“A mountain wave is actually very common here,” NWS meteorologist Zach Hiris said. “We have strong winds blowing across the mountain peaks. They have to come over them and then sink down. That’s why you’re seeing a lot of gusts in the east Front Ridge.”
Winds will still be bothersome later Wednesday. That will bring gusts at speeds up to 70 to 80 mph in the mountains and northern foothills, NWS stated in its report. In the higher mountains, gust could reach 90 mph.
A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for several counties. Skies are expected to be mostly sunny in the Denver metro area with a high near 80 degrees.

A cold front has also moved over the region, and temperatures for the rest of the week will plunge into seasonal numbers. Wednesday night’s low will drop to 34 degrees. It will remain breezy for most of the night with some cloud coverage.
