Alongside triathlon teammate and Colorado native Summer Rappaport, McDowell is heading to his first Olympics this summer. He became USA Triathlon’s Junior Athlete of the Year in 2009 and ’10 and represented Team USA at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, where he earned bronze in the Mixed Relay and silver in the individual. At age 19, McDowell suddenly took time away from competing when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy for six months and recently celebrated 10 years as cancer-free.
