Shrouded by smoke from wildfires across the West, the skyline hangs over traffic as it slows to a crawl as motorists head southbound on Interstate 25 into the center of downtown during evening rush-hour Friday, July 23, 2021, in Denver.

There is a 30% chance of thunderstorms across much of the Denver area Saturday afternoon and evening, ushering in a cooler weekend.

A high near 85 under mostly cloudy skies is forecast, according to the National Weather Service. The thunderstorm threat will remain until 1 a.m. Sunday.

There is a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon, the NWS predicts. Sunday’s high will be around 89 degrees and the low around 63.

In the mountains, the good news is that drier air has moved over the burn areas, lessening the odds of flash flooding, though not ruling it out entirely in the Cameron Peak and Williams Fork burn areas, according to the NWS.
