A bank robbery suspect was shot by a Colorado Springs officer Thursday in an exchange of gunfire, police said.

The police shooting happened at about 4 p.m. in the area of Palmer Park and Academy boulevards, according to police.

Detectives tried to stop a vehicle “believed to be involved in two bank robberies” when a suspect inside the vehicle fired at least one shot, police said. “At least one officer fired at least one round in return,” police said.

The suspect was hit, placed in custody and given medical aid before being taken to a local hospital. No officers were injured.

An investigation headed by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is ongoing.
