An inmate died Wednesday at the Jefferson County jail, and an investigation is underway.

Melissa Chavez, 43, was found at about 5:35 a.m. in her cell in an unresponsive state, according to the sheriff’s office. Staff attempted to revive Chavez, who was pronounced dead on scene by medical personnel.

On Sunday, Chavez was arrested by Lakewood police for investigation of first-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft and criminal possession of a financial transaction device, along with outstanding warrants, a news release said.

The First Judicial District Law Enforcement Critical Incident Response Team is investigating her death. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
