3 p.m. — There weren’t any significant upsets in the 2A preliminaries as returning state champions from last year and the remaining undefeated wrestlers all proved to be too tough in the first round.
Here’s a quick run-through of Thursday’s action:
* Remington Peterson, a senior from Rye, is still undefeated in 2022 with a win in his quarterfinal bout. He’s now 30-0. The other undefeated wrestler returning for a state championship in 2A is heavyweight Leith Ibrahim (33-0), a junior from Wiggins. Ibrahim pinned Clayton Woods of Highland to reach the quarters.
* At 126 pounds, Levi Martin (Mancos, 33-4) and Cedaredge senior Lane Hunsberger (34-1), both returning state champions, are currently on a collision course on the top and bottom half of the bracket, as both pinned their way to the quarterfinals. Martin, a sophomore, is wrestling up this year after he won at 113 pounds in 2021. He will face the tougher quarterfinal match between the two in Yuma senior John Smith (31-4).
* Eyan Chavez (39-2), the wrestler who secured Centauri’s first state championship since 2010 last year with an individual title at 152, will look for a second successive title at that weight class. Chavez, a senior, will face Ky Bandy (30-5), a senior from Limon in the quarterfinals, as Chavez goes for a second successive state title. — Brendan Ploen
2:20 p.m. — The first sanctioned girls’ state tournament at Ball Arena got underway to a slate of blowouts. All eight of the preliminary matches in the 100-pound bracket were decided by pin, with seven of those falls coming in the first period. That trend continued at 105 pounds (six pins), 111 (seven), 118 (five), 127 (eight), 136 (six) and 147 (five), with more quick matches likely to come in the upper weights. — Kyle Newman
1:20 p.m. — Woodland Park senior Brady Hankin got off to a good start in his quest to join the four-time champions club on Saturday. Hankin improved to 33-2 this year with a first-period pin of Kennedy junior Gabriel Little. — Kyle Newman
12:35 p.m. — Mullen High school has a star in the making in 106-pounder Dale O’Blia. He remained undefeated in his prep career, pinning Platte Valley sophomore Jullian Marquez in the second period in Thursday’s Class 3A preliminary round. O’Bila, who won a state title last year as a freshman, is now 58-0 in his high school career.
Last year, he became the Mustangs’ first individual champion since 2017. — Patrick Saunders
Noon — The state tournament kicks off today at Ball Arena. In the history of the tournament, 29 wrestlers have finished their careers with four state titles (tap here to see the full list). Two more could join that exclusive club this year in seniors Daniel Cardenas of Pomona (Class 5A-152 pounds) and Brady Hankin (3A-138) of Woodland Park. That’s just one of many storylines to watch over the next three days.
Some pre-tournament reading: Post reporter Sean Keeler caught up with Monarch’s Zach Ferrera, who is competing at state just two months after his family lost their house in the Marshall fire.
