9:12 p.m.: The Wray Eagles have always traveled well to the state finals and they certainly made the most noise Friday night. The Class 2A powerhouse gave their fans plenty to cheer about in the semis. Wray, a town nestled nine miles from the Nebraska border and 25 from the Kansas state line, has been dominant in the last few years as they have won three out of the last four 2A crowns. The Eagles will have three compete for a title on Saturday: Brady Collins (42-0) at 132 pounds, Caeden Bauer at 182 (38-7) and the fan section had one of the last loud cheers of the night when heavyweight Tell Wade (39-2) secured a pin to send the Eagles fans home happy. — Brendan Ploen
8:44 p.m.: In girls wrestling, there was plenty of noise being made as they entered into a thrilling Friday night atmosphere at Ball Arena for the first time since it became a fully-sanctioned sport. The 118-pound semifinals delivered. With three state champions vying for the final two spots, it was two excellent battles. Olathe’s Nicole Koch pinned Northridge’s Victoria Perales in the third period, while Persaeus Gomez of Pomona beat Denver East’s Israel Resendez in a 12-5 decision.
Also in girls wrestling, it will be the first time a wrestler from Far Northeast of Denver Public School will have a chance to win a state title in either boys or girls wrestling. Stefania Jaramillo, a junior and the No.3-ranked wrestler in the country at 215 pounds, will have a shot at her first CHSAA state title, as she pinned Broomfield’s Max Ziegler. Jaramillo will face Ciara Monger of Calahan on Saturday night. — Brendan Ploen
8:30 p.m.: In Class 3A, the other four-timer potential for this weekend is still intact. Woodland Park’s Brady Hankin (35-2) scored a 7-1 decision over Kilian Schultz of Severance. He will face D’mitri Garza-Alarcon from Fort Lupton in a highly-anticipated showdown, after he scored a 5-0 decision over Brandon Boehm of Florence. Garza-Alarcon won state last year at 126 pounds as a freshman.
8:13 p.m.: In Class 5A at 152 pounds, Daniel Cardenas of Pomona is nearly there. The undefeated senior (38-0) will wrestle for the honor of becoming a four-time champion Saturday night. He pinned DJ Rock of Brighton in the opening seconds of the second period. He will face Justin Kelchen (13-3) from Douglas County, after he pinned Grand Junction’s Cale Moore with 30 seconds to go in the match. — Brendan Ploen
8 p.m.: At 126 pounds in Class 2A, Cedaredge’s Lane Hunsberger (42-1), the reigning champion at that weight, is through to the finals and will face Daniel Apodaca (29-7) of Dolores Huerta Prep Academy, after he beat Mancos’ Levi Martin in an 8-4 decision. Brady Collins got out to an early lead and pinned his opponent in the third period. Joe Zamora of Rocky Ford also won his semifinal bout in a 4-1 decision. It might be one of the best finals on Saturday night. Collins is undefeated at 42-0, Zamora is 43-1. — Brendan Ploen
4:08 p.m.: Second round-consolation matches are set to begin sharply at 4:30. After that round is complete, there will be a 25-minute warm-up period proceeding the semifinals. That means the semifinals will likely be pushed back slightly beyond its scheduled 6:30 p.m. start date. — Kyle Newman
3:00 p.m.:The most aggressive wrestler in the tournament field at Ball Arena? Look no further than Pueblo East senior Xavier Freeman. The defending 4A state champion is rolling through the 220-pound bracket at incredible speed.
In the first round, Freeman pinned Skyview sophomore Rene Perez in just 18 seconds. Then Freeman advanced to the semifinals on Friday with a 54-second pin of Harrison senior Ojani Moore. Itap all part of Freeman’s strategy.
“We’re trying to win a championship for the team. So, I’m trying to get extra points with the pin,” Freeman said. “I kind of create my own action. I like to wrestle my match instead of wrestling their match. Thatap the easiest way to win.”
Pueblo East currently ranks second in the 4A team standings with 54.5 points. Cheyenne Mountain is in the lead with 60.5.
“I think we’re in position,” Freeman said. “If the kids on the backside continue to not give up, I think we definitely have a shot at the title.” — Kyle Fredrickson
2:19 p.m.: Brady Collins from Wray and Rocky Ford’s Joe Zamora each notched a win in Friday morning’s quarterfinals at 132 pounds, as they both secured convincing pins as well. It will be solid semifinal Friday night, as Zamora will square off against Jackson Helmke, a senior from Buena Vista with a 23-2 record, while Collins will face Meeker senior Ty Goedert (23-10), and has outscored both his opponents 23-3 in two major decision wins. Zamora actually lost to Cedaredge’s Lane Hunsberger in the 120-pound semifinals last year in 6-4 overtime decision, but took home third-place.
At 126 pounds, Levi Martin (34-4), who won at 113 pounds last year, did end up having a tougher matchup against Yuma senior John Smith in his quarterfinal bout. After both secured a point in the third period, they went to overtime. With 30 seconds left, Martin captured an escape point, only for Smith to capture his own with 12 seconds to go. It was tied after the first overtime, and that meant it would be a tiebreaker. In the second overtime, with Smith on the bottom, Martin earned a dramatic point to move on to the semis, where he will face Daniel Apodaca (28-7) from Dolores Huerta Prep Academy.
Lane Hunsberger (41-1) from Cedaredge also eked out a 6-5 decision. After getting out to a 5-2 lead after two periods against Dillion Buford of Crowley County, Bufford fought back with three third-period points including a two-point takedown with 13 seconds to go. With Buford trying to secure overtime, Hunsberger got out of the jam and won an escape point with just four seconds left to advance. Now, he will face Benny Carlo Gonzales (27-7) of Rocky Ford in the semis. — Brendan Ploen
1:20 p.m. — Prairie View’s Ane`e Vigil, the lone defending Class 5A state champion not on Pomona, followed up his tech fall on Thursday night with a major decision over Pine Creek’s Sir Israel Pulido in Friday’s quarterfinals. The junior faces Pomona junior Mark Cardenas in the semifinals; Cardenas has cruised with a pair of pins so far. — Kyle Newman
1:05 p.m. Pomona sophomore Geno Cardenas (106) advanced to the semifinals with a dramatic 3-1 decision over Isaiah Sisneros of Lakewood. After two scoreless periods, Cardenas earned an escape point to lead. But a stalling penalty tied the match with 15 seconds left. Thatap when Cardenas hustled to earn a two-point takedown with only two seconds on the clock. — Kyle Fredrickson

10:40 a.m.: The early session of the quarterfinals is in the books, with a whole lot of chalk heading into the semifinals. The one to watch later tonight is the Girls 118-pound bracket, which features three returning state champions (Olathe’s Nicole Koch, Denver East’s Israel Resendez and Pomona’s Persaeus Gomez). Resendez and Gomez will face off tonight, with the winner likely getting the unbeaten Koch in Saturday’s championship round. — Matt Schubert
9:38 a.m.: Woodland Park 138-pound senior Brady Hankin cleared his first major hurdle to becoming a four-time state champion, beating Skyview’s Isaac Ibarra in an 8-4 decision in the 3A bracket. Ibarra came into the match with 40 wins on his resume, so this was no easy advance to the semifinals. Looming later in the finals: A potential showdown with Fort Lupton’s D`mitri Garza-Alarcon, who already has two pins in the tournament and is a returning state champion himself. — Matt Schubert
8:30 a.m.: The second day of the state wrestling tournament is underway. By the end of the day, we will know who has advanced to Saturday’s championship rounds and which schools are positioned to compete for team titles. The Class 2A/3A and Girls quarterfinals run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and will be quickly followed by the Class 4A/5A quarterfinals from 12:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. All of the semifinals are set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
In case you missed it, The Post’s Patrick Saunders had the story on undefeated Mullen wunderkind Dale O’Blia from Day 1 of the tournament, while Kyle Fredrickson followed Thompson Valley’s Jackzen Rairdon, who’s gunning for a 50-win season in Class 4A.
