A report of a person armed with a rifle prompted a lockdown at Rock Canyon High School Thursday morning, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The report was made at about 9:22 a.m. about someone who was “possibly armed with what appeared to be a rifle” in the school’s parking lot, according to a news release. The person making the report heard three or four popping sounds.
Information was relayed to the school resource officer and deputies responded to the school at 5810 McArthur Ranch Road, Highlands Ranch, which was put on lockdown.
Deputies contacted a 17-year-old student outside the school and a water pellet gun was recovered, the release said. The student’s parents have been notified and are cooperating with an investigation.
The school resumed normal operations at about 10:30 a.m., the sheriff’s office said.
