Denver weather: Have we gotten our last snow of the season already?

Typically, Denver sees its last snow in April. But it’s possible there’ll be no accumulation for rest of season.

While most people would argue that we will absolutely see another round of snow this season in Denver, there have been plenty of years where we didn’t get any snow in April or May.

I wrote a story recently about how Februarys are trending snowier over the past 10 years while Aprils have been increasingly less snowy during that same time.

April is technically the fifth-snowiest month of the season now behind November, December, February and March. Although most years, we do get at least one 1-inch snowstorm during April, it doesn’t always happen.

Here is a look at the average, earliest and latest dates for 1-inch snow to accumulate across the Front Range.

Denver

  • Average date of last 1 inch of snow: April 22
  • Earliest date of last 1 inch of snow: March 3, 1887
  • Latest date of last 1 inch of snow: May 29, 1975

Boulder

  • Average date of last 1 inch of snow: April 25
  • Earliest date of last 1 inch of snow: March 13, 1925
  • Latest date of last 1 inch of snow: June 2, 1951

Fort Collins

  • Average date of last 1 inch of snow: April 16
  • Earliest date of last 1 inch of snow: February 11, 2012
  • Latest date of last 1 inch of snow: June 7, 2009

Colorado Springs

  • Average date of last 1 inch of snow: April 16
  • Earliest date of last 1 inch of snow: February 20, 1989
  • Latest date of last 1 inch of snow: June 10, 1975

Most of the time, the Front Range cities will experience their last 1 inch of snow in mid to late April. In some years, we saw our last 1 inch of snow at the end of May or even in early June for many areas. In other years, our last 1 inch of snow for the season occurred in February or early March.

It’s been a while since our last 1-inch snowstorm happened in March, though. We’d have to go back to 2007 for when that happened. Regardless, it is entirely possible not to get any more snow for the season, albeit pretty unlikely, too.

The forecast holds the possibility of a few spring storms over the next two weeks, but will they guarantee at least an inch of snow? Maybe. Maybe not.

This time of the year brings warm weather, so, like we’ve seen recently, we may get all rain with barely any snow. I think it’s a safe bet that we will get more snow this season, but we are nearing the end of our snow season here along the Front Range.

When do you think we will get the last 1-inch of snow?
