Just days after the Denver Pioneers men’s hockey team won the national championship, the school’s athletic director announced he is stepping down.

Karlton Creech — who has been the program’s vice chancellor for athletics, recreation and Ritchie Center operations since 2018 — will leave “upon the hiring of a successor later this year,” the school said.

“I am forever grateful to the University of Denver, Chancellor Emerita Rebecca Chopp, Chancellor Jeremy Haefner and Trustee John Miller for entrusting me with the leadership of the best NCAA DI non-football athletic program in the country,” Creech said in a news release. “I am grateful to the coaches, staff and student-athletes whose tireless efforts continue to produce excellence across our division. While I am looking forward to the future with great enthusiasm, a part of my heart will always be with the Pioneers.”

During his tenure, DU’s athletic programs won 19 regular-season conference titles and 23 conference tournament titles. He has also hired 12 of the Pioneers’ current 18 head coaches, including the men’s hockey program’s David Carle.

The school is conducting a national search for Creech’s successor.
