The identities of an armed suspect and two El Paso County deputies involved in a deadly incident in Manitou Springs last week were released Tuesday. The suspect and a police dog were killed.

At about 11 p.m. on April 11 police and deputies responded to a business in the 900 block of Manitou Avenue on a report of an armed man menacing people, according to a sheriff’s office news release. Shots were exchanged between the suspect and authorities. The suspect died at the scene. A dog with the sheriff’s office was shot and killed.

The suspect has been identified as Wilford Robert DeWeese, 67, of Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The deputies, who are on administrative leave per sheriff’s office policy, are identified as Daniel LeBaron and Ronnie Hancock. Both deputies have been with the office since 2013. Police dog Jinx had been in service since 2020 and was assigned to Hancock. An investigation is ongoing.
